Certificate Program

and Continuing Education Credits Available

Register for Gerontology Online!  Six online courses focus on important topic relating to the aging process, enhancing the skill set of professionals working in the field of aging.  Courses can be taken individually or as a certificate program, and are available 24/7 so that participants can access them on their own timetable and at their own pace. 

Continuing education credits (CNEs and CEUs) are available for Registered Nurses, Nursing Home Administrators, and Social Workers.  This program is offered by Mather LifeWays Institute on Aging in collaboration with Rush University College of Nursing and the State of Illinois.

Concepts of Aging ($159 per participant)

An overview of the theories and processes of aging from multiple perspectives is presented. Implications for health and social services, and public policy related to demographic trends in the aging population, are emphasized. (8 continuing education credits)


Cultural Dimensions of Aging  ($159 per participant)

Based on the Core Curriculum in Ethnogeriatrics, this course focuses on increasing awareness and competence related to health care service issues faced by the growing numbers of minority and disadvantaged older adults. An emphasis on health beliefs, values, disease patterns, and health service utilization forms the basis for discussing culturally competent care delivery to this group. (8 continuing education credits)

Environmental Context of Aging ($159 per participant)

Examine the impact of environmental factors (social, living arrangements, long-term care environment) on older adults. Learn how environmental factors may be modified to facilitate a model of capacity-building and capacity-maintenance for diverse groups of older adults.  (8 continuing education credits)

Mental Health & Aging  ($159 per participant)
Normal and abnormal changes in cognitive and memory processes, psychiatric disorders, effects of loss, and substance misuse/abuse by older adults are discussed. Therapeutic modalities are described in relation to the various mental health issues older adults experience.  (8 continuing education credits)

Interdisciplinary Seminar on Aging ($159 per participant)
Focuses on the interdisciplinary team model as a method of managing geriatric care. Explores geriatric issues that cross multiple disciplines including pain management, geropharmacology, ethical issues, and health care service delivery across various settings. The clinical component of the seminar allows learners to participate in interdisciplinary care planning and management of older adults in various health care settings based on areas of interest.  (8 continuing education credits)

Interventions with Older Adults  ($159 per participant)

Incorporating current gerontological standards of care from various sources, this course focuses on the most recent advances in the field of aging. It helps participants learn how to assess and manage the care of diverse groups of older adults in various settings. Evidence-based content covers common geriatric health problems and management, preventive services, and palliative care. Strategies and resources for applying this content in long-term care settings are highlighted in the optional clinical component of the course. (8 continuing education credits)

 certificate program (six courses) is $1000.
