Empower Online

A Resource and Support Program for Working Caregivers

It is well known that caring for someone with a chronic illness is stressful and takes an enormous physical and emotional toll on caregivers.  While there are courses available on caring for loved-ones with chronic illness, Empower Online focuses on self-care for the caregiver.

Developed by Mather LifeWays Institute on Aging with the support of the American Business Collaboration for Quality Dependent Care (ABC), Empower Online is an eight-week online education course that teaches caregivers to:

  • Manage the ambiguities of self-care or recipient-care while caring for loved ones with chronic medical issues
  • Manage stress and emotions such as fear and sadness
  • Communicate effectively with health care providers, family, friends, and   co-workers
  • Locate additional caregiver resources

Classes can be accessed 24/7

Classes begin the first Monday of every month and move forward at weekly intervals, encouraging discussion about new topics each week.  Participants will read course materials, participate in discussion boards, surveys, and live chat sessions. Some classes include watching videos or recorded training sessions.  Participants only need an active email account, Internet access, and a computer.
