This intensive, highly interactive one-day train-the-trainer workshop focuses on three key areas that support a person-directed culture in senior living communities. Workshop participants are provided with skills and tools to address cultural diversity and cultural sensitivity in their workplace, develop communication strategies for their multicultural work teams, and build a multicultural workforce through teamwork and mentoring.
Fostering Collaboration in a Culturally Diverse Workplace
The cultural/ethnic diversity in America is changing rapidly with significant increases in minority populations projected with the next 20 years. It is import for senior living staff to understand the impact of this diversity on their relationships both with residents and each other. Key components include:
- Exploring cultural/ethnic demographics of the older population in America
- Increasing cultural sensitivity/cultural competence
- Reducing the frustration that results from not understanding different cultural perspectives
- Evaluating levels of cultural sensitivity/cultural competence within our senior living communities
Eliminating Communication Barriers in Senior Living
Effective communication is key - both to providing quality customer service and to building effective work teams. Good communication skills are crucial to staff morale, teamwork, and staff retention. Key components include:
- Precepts of effective verbal and non-verbal communication
- Communication across ethnic, generational, and occupational groups
Leading/Mentoring Effective Cross-Functional Teams
Effective work teams are core to providing quality service to residents. Good leadership and the use of mentoring are important to building these strong, effective teams. When the organization is operating as an integrated system, job satisfaction and staff retention increase. Synergy results in improved customer service. Key components include:
- Essentials of effective teamwork
- Developing and fostering effective cross-functional teams
- Improving understanding of responsibilities of co-workers within and outside of their departments
- Improving the way employees work together to achieve results
- Developing an effective mentoring program
- Mentoring employees from diverse backgrounds
Workshop participants receive:
- A 6-module training guide with easy-to-use training instructions and exercises
- Practical trainer tips for content instruction
- PowerPoint training slides for use during training presentations
- Participant handouts
- Continuing Education Units: 6.5 contact hours for registered nurses, nursing home administrators, and social workers

Offered as a three-part webinar series,this program provides an overview of essential skills necessary to empower all staff to partner with residents in promoting a person-directed culture. Each hour long webinar focuses on a single topic. Topics include: creating cultural diversity and cultural sensitivity in the workplace; developing strategies for effective communication across work teams; and, building a quality workforce through effective teamwork and mentoring.
The LEAP for Senior Living webinar series is offered on the following dates at a cost of $250 per organization.
