What is LEAP?

LEAP is a comprehensive workforce development program that empowers staff, increases retention, and promotes staff-resident relationships through a model of person-centered care. Hundreds of senior living and long-term care (LTC) communities across the U.S. have participated in LEAP train-the-trainer workshops.

LEAP has significantly increased nursing leadership and nursing staff retention, communication, work effectiveness, job satisfaction, and work empowerment. Effective workforce improvement through LEAP has resulted in measurable improvements in quality of care and satisfaction among residents and families.

LEAP is an acronym corresponding to the program goals:

  • Learn how to build strong relationships among nursing, residents, and families
  • Empower nursing staff and create structures for advancement
  • Achieve staff development and retention goals
  • Produce measurable outcomes

LEARN how to build strong relationships among nurses, residents, and families

The senior living and long-term care resident, as the care recipient, is at the center of the LEAP workforce initiative. Developing highly qualified, dedicated, and effective nurse leaders and staff creates quality of life and well-being for residents.

LEAP equips nurse managers, staff nurses, and certified nurse assistants with the essential tools and skills to:

  • Build positive relationships with residents and families
  • Foster capable work teams
  • Develop effective communication techniques
  • Feel valued and effective
  • Release "hidden" talents

In 1999 Mather LifeWays partnered with Life Services Network of Illinois to develop LEAP.
