Chicago Philharmonic Orchestra Brings Music to the Evanston Community at The Mather

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Evanston, Ill. (June 10, 2013) – The Chicago Philharmonic Orchestra will give a
special performance at The Mather, an all-inclusive community for those 62 and
better, on Wednesday, June 26, at 3 p.m. The Mather invites the public to enjoy
this performance by a quartet of one of the nation’s finest orchestras. There is no
cost to attend, but guests are asked to RSVP by Wednesday, June 19, to (847)
448.0793. Valet parking will be provided.

Music is a pivotal aspect of innovative care among older adults today as studies
link music to an increase in potential for personal well being and quality of life
among the 65+ years demographic. A March 2013 University of London study
specifically links music-making to “enhanced social cohesion, enjoyment,
personal development, and empowerment,” contributing to “recovery from
depression and maintenance of personal well-being.”

“Music therapy for pain management has been proven highly effective in many
studies, and interestingly, just listening to music of any style on a daily basis can
result in a decrease in pain,” said Linda Hollinger-Smith, PhD, RN, FAAN Vice
President, Mather LifeWays Institute on Aging, a thought leader in the area of
research for older adults. “While it is effective for all ages, it has been proven to
be most successful in the older adult population.” The Institute offers an “Orange
Paper” about living well through music (available for

Mather LifeWays incorporates music into much of what it does and its many
programs organization-wide. Mather LifeWays employees can even receive
reimbursement through its Employee Wellness Program if they choose to take
music classes as part of their own personal enrichment.

As the Chicago Philharmonic Orchestra brings its classical prowess to town, The
Mather welcomes Evanston and surrounding neighbors to come enjoy the music.
